tw telecom Manhattan - One Year After Sandy

This week, New York Real Estate Journal followed up on the past year since Hurricane Sandy hit New York. The storm resulted in the flooding of NYC’s subway system and outbound road tunnels, in additional to destroying and leaving millions of homes and businesses without electricity for days.

New York City’s telecommunications infrastructure took a hard hit, due to network outages, even causing the closure of the New York Stock Exchange for two consecutive days. Fortunately, tw telecom fared well during the storm with its all-fiber network running smoothly before, during and after the disaster.

"While every service provider was impacted, tw telecom customers were minimally affected as a result of preparation in advance of the storm; the resiliency of our all-fiber, business Ethernet network; and the collaboration of our local teams with building managers of properties where our fiber network connects to their buildings," said Robert Bianco, Vice President and General Manager at tw telecom Manhattan. "Even considering our network and team's resiliency, we can still take away lessons from Sandy, some of which include being aware of where our equipment is being placed in buildings, how best to bring fuel into the city in the case of a disaster, and ideas on even better preparing for the next time; getting to that next level. Because, as much as we don't like to think about it, an event like this will happen again."

In the year following Hurricane Sandy, tw telecom has continued to upgrade and enhance its network to provide New Yorkers with the best possible services. Its Intelligent Network has the ability to pre-set bandwidth utilization thresholds, without human intervention, to automatically double or triple network business Ethernet bandwidth when reached.
