TELEHOUSE America’s NYIIX Reaches a Notable Milestone – Exceeds 100Gbps Daily Traffic Volume Record

TELEHOUSE America’s New York International Internet Exchange (NYIXX) is not only the largest public Internet exchange in the New York Metro Market, but today the company announces the news that it has also consistently exceeded the 100Gbps (gigabits per second) daily traffic volume milestone this year. Presently at an impressive 127Gbps, NYIIX has doubled its traffic volume in just under 18 months. This very feat furthers the exchange’s position as one of the top 10 of the world’s largest peering points, and solidifies the strong presence TELEHOUSE’s connection points have on a domestic and global scale. Since its establishment in 1996, NYIIX has been the busiest and longest-running neutral exchange point in New York, with about 130 active peering members from around the world.

NYIIX is one of the largest neutral Internet exchange points on the US East coast and is operated by TELEHOUSE. Its mission is to provide the Internet community with a neutral, scalable peering infrastructure and to assure reliable stable Internet connectivity.  Located in downtown New York City, NYIIX provides fully redundant equipment and fiber connections to the most popular local carrier hotels: 25 Broadway, 60 Hudson St., and 111 Eighth Ave. in Manhattan, 7 Teleport on Staten Island, and 85 10th Avenue located in the Chelsea District of Manhattan. Our Chelsea Center is the most recent addition to the TELEHOUSE family.

In addition to public peering, NYIIX offers private peering over VLAN, enabling secure private peering or direct bandwidth over the NYIIX. Peering exchanges, such as the NYIIX, were formed to facilitate the connection of independent networks for the exchange of data and routing information without using the crowded public networks. TELEHOUSE Peering allows customers to interconnect over its layer-2 switch to many transit, content and application providers, at multiple locations, to improve network performance and cut costs.

“Exceeding 100 gigabits per second of traffic is the result of our continuing ability to increase NYIIX members along with their increasing traffic volume,” says Akio Sugeno, Senior Director of Internet Engineering and Operations Business Development. “Such an accomplishment proves that NYIIX is one of the most important IXP’s in the United States.”

The NYIIX platform is regularly updated to meet the growing technology requirements of the industry and currently operates Brocade RX series switches. The platform supports IPv4 and IPv6 connections and with bilateral or multilateral peering arrangements. Sflow capability will be added this year and some expansion plans are under consideration.
