Optelian Scores Optical Networking Win in Somaliland

SomCable in Somaliland will deploy Optelian’s LightGAIN system as the basis for its new terrestrial IP-over-DWDM backbone network.

SomCable is a Somaliland-registered, fiber-optic service provider that is constructing the Berbera landing station that will enable Somaliland to interconnect with submarine cable networks that are currently deployed in the Red Sea, the body of water that separates the northeast African continent from Saudi Arabia.

Once the Berbera cable landing is completed, it is expected to drive broadband adoption throughout the region and form the foundation for economic development and job creation for the citizens of a region with a recent history of war and political upheaval.

“After exploring various network architectures,” explains Michael Cothill, Chief Executive Officer of SomCable, “we converged on a next-generation IP over Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical network to carry voice and data traffic throughout Somaliland, and Optelian provides exactly what we are looking for. With our aggressive plans to provision a new terrestrial backbone to transport all wireless and Internet traffic, SomCable needs an easy-to-use, reliable and scalable solution that will allow us to start small and grow to meet our customers’ needs.”

Optelian is a trusted global provider of advanced multi-technology optical networking solutions for access, metro, long-haul, campus and data center interconnect applications. Designed and manufactured in North America, Optelian’s LightGAIN system allows network operators to build high-capacity, next-generation, carrier-grade WDM networks.
