In the background is the Colosseum. Enter Katherine Spitler, our gifted and talented Art Director. She has helped countless companies find success – from the design of brochures and facts sheets to full rebrands to new websites. She truly does it all, balancing a heavy workload while satisfying clients with very particular tastes. It’s no easy feat, and her tireless work recently garnered attention from The Buffalo News in an article titled, [“Where Buffalo’s millennials work.”](http://www.buffalonews.com/business/prospectus/where-buffalos-millennials-work-20150125) The article explains why Buffalo, N.Y., is the perfect spot for creative, hardworking young people like Kat. She discusses a recent project she did which garnered her praise from a JSA client. “It made me feel great,” she says. “Hitting the nail on the head very early in the process is very satisfying.” We can always count on Kat to hit the nail on the head. And we thought her recent recognition in the Buffalo News was the perfect opportunity for us to kick off an ongoing series called, “Know Your JSAer,” which will feature a list of questions answered by different members of our staff. Read on to learn more about Art Director Katherine Spitler. **What got you into design work?** I have always had an affinity for and fascination with art and design. I have been drawing and creating since I can remember, but everything came together when I studied graphic design at the University of Notre Dame. I did some work as a student and intern before I took it on as my full-time career. **Who is your favorite artist/designer?** I love illustrators; those individuals who cross the bridge between fine art and design. Norman Rockwell, Alphonse Mucha, and Drew Struzan come to mind. **What are some projects you are most proud of?** I’m always proud of the work we do for events, whether it’s the directory for TEX or signage for a small charity gala. I also like crafting identities, so our own recent re-branding was a fulfilling challenge. **What is your favorite thing about working at JSA?** The people! The team is comprised of highly talented people with brains and big hearts in equal measure. It makes for a positive and supportive work environment. **What is the best thing about working from home?** For a creative-type, having a personalized and comfortable workspace is crucial. Plus, no commute! That’s a big bonus during Buffalo winters. **Favorite movie?** Too many to list, but I’ve always liked Gladiator, the Dark Knight, and anything by Hayao Miyazaki. **Favorite TV show?** Here’s where my inner-nerd really shows: Firefly, BBC’s Sherlock, Doctor Who, and Breaking Bad **Favorite actor/actress?** It’s difficult to pick just one...Probably someone British, haha. **Coffee or tea?** Both! But I drink tea more often. **Mac or PC?** I have been using Macs for the past few years for design work, but I grew up on PCs. Both have their merits. **Favorite Adobe program?** InDesign. **Favorite thing about living in Buffalo?** The people and character. I am fortunate that I moved here during the new renaissance of growth and optimism that you can see happening everywhere. There are so many things to do year-round, the people here are both warm and resilient, and it’s really a city with loads of character and beauty. Oh, and chicken wings of course! **Hate or love snow?** Let’s just say I love it until February 1. After that I’m ready for spring! **Favorite city to visit?** I would love to go back to Rome. I studied abroad in Italy as a college student and I can’t wait to go back someday! **Airplane or roadtrip?** If the road offers beautiful scenery and good company, absolutely road trip. **Favorite book?** Books I remember having an impact on me growing up include the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Chronicles of Narnia.
