Fully online as of July 24, 2013, the new core deployment consists of four Alcatel-Lucent 7950 XRS switches and represents a major upgrade that now enables DE-CIX to offer advanced Ethernet-based services across a highly reliable architecture. The first three core nodes were taken live on May 22, June 19 and July 10. This morning's successful upgrade is the result of intensive planning and precise, passionate performance. A big hand goes out to the DE-CIX technical team, who worked many hours - at night - to take the core switches live. And as Kay Schroeder, Senior Network Engineer at DE-CIX, said: “At least it wasn’t as hot at night as it was during the day!” Apparently, working at night has its advantages, especially at a well-cooled data center. At 2:00 in the morning, four DE-CIX engineers (Kay Schroeder, Christian Freiding, Christian Gebhardt and Marian Mitev) started working to take the fourth core node live. As with the first three cores, one team member of DE-CIX’s support team and two people from Alcatel-Lucent were on standby via telephone in case any problems occurred. To migrate to the four new core nodes, 16.9 kilometers of dark fiber were lit, and 454 connections were established. Overall, 1,816 transceivers were cleaned and inserted. “With this upgrade, DE-CIX has improved its peering infrastructure by multiplying port density to accommodate the need for additional ports and the expected overall increase in data volumes in the next five to seven years,” commented Harald A. Summa, CEO for DE-CIX. During the next and final phase of the upgrade process and following a rigorous testing process, DE-CIX will install edge nodes and migrate existing customers to the new platform.
