Internet users worldwide rely on network operators to secure their infrastructure against the wide array of threats plaguing the Internet landscape. The study identifies these threats, which include DNS, routing, DoS, DDoS, as well as a list of more generic threats. By analyzing each of these threat groups, ENISA and DE-CIX were able to develop a list of suggested Best Practices to abide by in order to better protect the operators’ critical Internet infrastructure assets.
“The Internet can only function properly with the cooperation of many networks interconnecting smoothly,” states Dr. Thomas King, Head of Research & Development at DE-CIX. “And this principle is also true for security in this ecosystem: with this study, we want to initiate improvements in our industry. If every operator takes responsibility for his portion of the Internet, then the entire Internet landscape will become more secure.”
