Berkeley Research Group, LLC announced that it has released the first in a series of white papers that will address the critical issues surrounding IPv4 migration, including IPv4 address shortage problems and solutions. In this first installment, NATs—Are They a Long-Term Solution to the IPv4 Address Shortage?, BRG examines the use of Network Address Translation systems as a long-term solution to the impending IPv4 address shortage. Key areas addressed include:

• Tests of NAT systems indicate unreliability in transferring data
• Bandwidth usage and transparency are problematic under NATs
• New usage trends for mobile devices highlight additional problems with NATs
• Increased data traffic and continued reliance on carrier-grade NATs
