3 Tips to Master Your Next Networking Cocktail Event

The art of networking is a crucial part of today’s business world. By building a strong network, employees can position them to gain more success in their work environment. From a strong LinkedIn community to participating in networking organizations, there are many avenues to foster and develop your network.

Of all the networking platforms, a business cocktail reception can be one of the most beneficial ways to strengthen the depth of your network. The environment allows for personal connections to be made and a more relaxed setting. The following are three simple steps to make sure the next cocktail reception you attend for work is successful.

Be Prepared – Some events provide a registration page that includes the RSVP list. If there are companies you are interested in meeting with, check the list out ahead of time and do some research on the organization so you can be ready for a conversation.

Balance the Conversation – A cocktail reception is a less formal environment that does not necessarily have to be all about business. When meeting a new contact, be aware of the social queues they are giving off. If they seemed bored with business talk, try to find other topics to speak about such as hobbies or other non-work groups they participate in. A personal connection is a great tool for our 3rd tip.

Follow Up – The party is over, but the opportunity to develop a contact is not. Be sure to follow up after a networking event in a timely manner. And remember that great conversation you had with the SVP about skiing? Don’t forget to mention that in your email. There is a lot of meeting new people and exchanging business cards at these types of events so if you can include a reference that would help you be remembered, it will further warrant a response. You will be meeting a lot of people too, so making a note on the person’s business card is also a good way to refresh your memory the next day.
